Corns, Beans, Oh My!

My grandfather is a gardener.  Not just a raised bed garden kind of guy, but what I would consider a true gardener.  About as close as you can get without being a farmer!  He brings in a truckload of manure every year, tills the whole garden and plants a variety of things each year.

I grew up running through his gardens and orchards every year and now my kids are beginning to do the same.  Jordyn was pretty excited about it last year, but this year it was taken to a whole new level.  She really got down and dirty (even though it lasted maybe 30 minutes) and helped plant some corn and beans. While also getting a lesson from Poppy on the proper steps to successful planting.

Step 1: Pick out what you want to plant.

Step 2: Make a row in the dirt for your seeds and pack it down with your feet.

Step 3: Line the edges of your row with the seeds.

Step 4:  Go back and sprinkle seeds down the middle.

Step 5: Cover your row of seeds with dirt.  Put enough to cover the seeds but be careful not to put too much on top because it will make it hard to grow through.

Step 6: Put a stake at the end of your row and put the seed bag over the top of the stake so you know what was planted in that row.

Step 67: Repeat the above steps as necessary for different items.

(Meanwhile, your little brother is playing with the rusty wire stands and throwing rocks and your Mom is trying to take pictures while watching him at the same time.  He came out alive.  That's all that matters)

After the big kids were done bored with planting, I got a chance to plant some sunflowers.  Hudson wanted to be my little helper.

Until this week, we had a good growing game going on in the garden.  We will see how it fares after the  floods of rain this week.
